It’s been quite a whirlwind over the past few weeks. I recently took two weeks off—one leading up to my wedding and another week afterwards to soak in the joy of newlywed life. It was an amazing time, filled with love, celebration, and unforgettable moments. But now, reality has hit hard.
Getting back into the swing of things after such a significant life event has been incredibly challenging. I’ve returned to a mountain of work that feels both overwhelming and stressful. My motivation is low, but I know I have so much to accomplish and the clock is ticking. Here’s how I’m managing to navigate this difficult transition and some tips that might help you too if you’re in a similar boat.
Take Your Time
First and foremost, I’m reminding myself to take it slow. It’s unrealistic to expect myself to be at full productivity immediately. Easing back into work is crucial. I’ve adjusted my schedule to start with shorter work periods and gradually extend them as I get more comfortable. This grace period allows me to recalibrate and get back into a productive rhythm without burning out.
Start with Small Jobs
One strategy that’s been particularly helpful is tackling smaller, manageable tasks first. These quick wins build momentum and give me a sense of accomplishment. I’ve made a list of all my tasks and prioritized them, checking off the smaller items first. This approach not only helps me feel more in control but also boosts my confidence as I see my to-do list shrink.
Be Kind to Yourself
In the midst of all this, it’s easy to be hard on myself for not being as productive as I’d like to be. But I’m learning to practice self-care and positive self-talk. Taking breaks, staying hydrated, and nourishing my body are essential. Encouraging myself with positive affirmations and acknowledging that it’s okay to need time to readjust is crucial for my mental health.
Overcome Overwhelm
The sheer volume of work I need to catch up on can be paralysing. To combat this, I’m breaking down large tasks into smaller, more manageable parts. Setting realistic goals and focusing on what’s most important and urgent helps me stay on track. If possible, delegating some of the workload to colleagues or team members can also alleviate the pressure.
Stay Motivated
Staying motivated when my energy levels are low is a challenge. Setting milestones and celebrating small achievements along the way keeps me motivated. Treating myself after completing significant tasks—whether it’s a coffee break or a short walk—helps maintain my morale. Staying connected with colleagues and sharing my progress also provides a much-needed boost.
Energy Level Ups
Maintaining healthy habits is key to keeping my energy levels up. I’m prioritising a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. Short, regular breaks throughout the day help recharge my energy levels and keep me focused. Keeping my workspace clean and organized reduces stress and increases efficiency, making it easier to stay on top of my tasks.
Final Thoughts...
Getting back to work after a significant break is a process, and it’s okay to take it one step at a time. It’s been a difficult adjustment for me, and I’m sure many of you can relate. Remember to be patient with yourself and take it slow. You’ve got this!
I hope these tips help you as much as they’re helping me. If you’re also struggling to get back into the groove after a big life event, know that you’re not alone. We’ll get through this together!
